Mtatsminda Upper Funicular Station

sidebar-image
This building, located on Mtatsminda in Tbilisi, is the upper station of the historic Funicular railway and was constructed in 1938. It replaced the original station building, which was erected in 1905 when the Funicular first opened. The structure stands at an elevation of 727 meters above sea level.

In the early 1900s, a development plan and street network for the so-called "Upper Tbilisi" were devised, connecting it to "Lower Tbilisi" via a mountain tramway - the Funicular. The first reconstruction of the Funicular took place between 1936 and 1938, during which the aging upper station was replaced by a new building designed by architects Z. and N. Kurdiani, with A. Valabuyev as a co-author. Today, the building houses a functioning restaurant.

Did you know that...

1. From the early 19th century, the Mtatsminda district and its surrounding area were considered the property of the noble Gabashvili family. During this time, Ivan Poltoratsky - a friend of Ilia Chavchavadze - arrived in Georgia and married Nadezhda Gabashvili, a descendant of the same Gabashvili family that owned the land where Mtatsminda Park is now located. Notably, both the Gabashvili and Poltoratsky families played a significant role in the establishment of Mtatsminda Park and the Funicular.

2. The Funicular officially opened on March 27, 1905. The renowned artist Niko Pirosmani dedicated a large painting to it.

3. To encourage the first passengers, the Belgian anonymous company that owned the Funicular offered a substantial reward to anyone who rode the carriage up to Mtatsminda and back down again.

4. The length of the Funicular track is 501 meters. Each carriage can accommodate up to 60 passengers.
