St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church

sidebar-image
The Catholic Church in Tbilisi, built in the 1870s with Neo-Gothic and Classical details, is distinguished by its refined and remarkable architecture. Construction began in 1870 and continued until 1877. The building’s architect was Albert Zaltsman.

The construction of the church was largely funded by Polish Catholics living in Tbilisi, who played a significant role in the city's social life during the 19th century. During the Soviet period, the church was never fully closed, although its religious functions were greatly restricted. Later, the church became a cultural and spiritual center for the Polish community, and its significance was so great that Pope John Paul II personally visited it in 1999 and conducted a service.

Did you know that…

1. Above the entrance to the church courtyard, there is a Georgian inscription (alongside a Russian one) that informs us:
"The wall was built in the year 1891. By the initiative of Mikheil, Pavel, Nikoloz, and their mother Mariam Jimsherovi, in eternal memory of the Christ-loving benefactor, father, and husband - Ivane Petre’s son Jimsherovi."
