Ejmiatsin Church

sidebar-image
A 19th-century example of Armenian architecture located in Avlabari, Tbilisi. It mainly repeats the structure of medieval Georgian and Armenian churches, though the decoration of the facades and some interior design elements show influences of Classicism.

Between 1806 and 1808, Armenian refugees from Echmiadzin settled in Isani, Tbilisi, and built a small hall-type church here. In 1846, it was expanded and converted into a "cruciform" type church.

Did you know that...

1. In the eastern square of the church stands a khachkar (stone cross) dedicated by the Armenian community to the memory of those who died on April 9, 1989.

2. Ejmiatsin’s also regarded as Saint Sarkis (in Armenian, Surb Sarkis or Surf Sarkis) was an early Christian warrior-martyr and is a saint of the Armenian Apostolic Church, regarded as the protector of lovers.
